CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Hailey’s day was getting worse and worse. Not only did she have a raging headache thanks to Dr. Pervert Headbutter, but her sister wasn’t answering her phone again.

And now Graham had come out of the interrogation room expressing his doubts about the suspect.

“Oh, come on!” she shouted. “He’s violent, he’s an expert on herbs, and we found those pills.”

“He says those pills are psilocybin.”

Hailey gritted her teeth. Sheriff Blake had called her half an hour before to tell her that they had found a large plot of magic mushrooms growing in the guy's basement.

“Maybe some of them are, but the rest are going to be the drug he gave his victims. I’ll call the lab and tell them to test a cross sample.”

“They’ll do that anyway,” Graham replied.

“Yes, but we have to make sure,” Hailey said, impatient.

“What else did they find in the house?”

“Not much. They’re still searching.”

“Did they find a bunch of different types of rope and string?”

“They found two different types in the garden shed, a thick one and a thin one. Both common varieties in gardening. One is a perfect match for one of the types used on both bodies, the other is pretty close.”

“But the bodies were wrapped in eight different types. Did they find any alpaca wool?”

“They’re still searching, Graham. And no, they haven’t found any scarabs either. You think he’d hide that stuff on his property?”

“He hid the pills on his property.”

“Why are you on his side!”

“I’m on the victims’ side,” Graham explained calmly with just an edge of tension.

Why am I arguing with the one person who has my back?

Because he’s wrong, that’s why!

Not a good enough reason.

Hailey held her breath, counted to three, and said, “Sorry. I know that. And you’re a great interrogator. The best. So what did he admit?”

“He admitted he was watching porn just before we showed up and that he goes to prostitutes. Then I escalated him up to admitting the drugs. But that’s all. He’s dead solid when it comes to the murders.”

“And you believe him?”

Hailey couldn’t keep the impatience from her voice. This case was as good as solved. They could get back to Chicago!

“I don’t know what to believe. I’m going to keep at him.”

“Let’s do it together.”

Graham looked at her a moment.

“I promise to keep my cool,” Hailey said.

With anyone else, such an admission would have felt deeply embarrassing, but this was Graham she was talking to.

“Don’t,” Graham said. “I turned from bad cop to good cop. Now you get to be bad cop. That mother of a bruise on your forehead should inspire you.”

Hailey laughed. “How do you make me smile in the worst situations?”

“You do for me.”

They went back into the interrogation room to find Lucas Tremaine shivering with sweat. When he saw Hailey come through the door, his eyes widened.

“Look, I’m sorry. I—”

“Sorry doesn’t cut it,” she snapped. “Why did you kill those girls?”

“I didn’t!”

Hailey got in close.

"You were targeting drug addicts, and you were planning to distribute drugs, or maybe you have already.
